There are a lot of things I love about summer, but one of my favorite things is vacations. I don't know if it's nostalgia for summer break, but there's something about going on vacation during warm weather that makes you feel like a kid again.
Of course, being a grown up means that your vacations usually involve more booze and less of crafting those lizards out of beads. While I could wax on about what to pack for the perfect summer vaycay, I'm gonna focus on the most important thing: What wine should be your travel companion?
One of the things I look for in a summer wine (besides a great flavor), is a screwtop cap. Part of this is based on experience (No one wants to find themselves with the perfect bottle of wine at the beach and nothing but a fork and some keys to open it), but part of it is just practical. Here's why:
Screw caps have apparently been around since the 1950s, so it's not exactly a new concept. Admittedly, screwcaps have been associated with cheap wines, so unfortunately they've gotten a bad rep for a lot of wine drinkers. BUT NOT FOR LONG. The screwcap is making a triumphant comeback, especially among white wines.
One of the great things about screwtop wines is that they don't allow any oxygen into the wine, which prevents it from going bad. However, screwtops tend to work best with wines that are designed to be drunk young (think immediately to 5-10 years), since often more complex wines are thought to need a tiny amount of oxygen when aging.
Which brings me to the Mañina Sauv Blanc. I bought this wine on a whim on a grocery shopping trip right after returning from a trip to Mexico. After nearly a week of existing largely on piña coladas and pastor tacos, there was just something so appealingly refreshing about a crisp white wine (plus it was like... $7 at Kroger) to soothe the post-vacation blues.
One thing I tend to look for in my sauvignon blancs is a really crisp, mineral-y flavor and lots of citrus. I also like it when they have a super bright, almost grassy tone to them (I know, kinda weird). I was a little skeptical of this one when I saw the deeper yellow color, but it actually has a nice minerality and a flavor that reminds me a little of lemonade. It's definitely softer than other sauv blancs I've had, but it makes for a dreamy warm-weather wine that's perfect for soaking up the last few weeks of summer!
OUR RATING: Great, affordable white wine to cure your post-vacation blues. Perfect with seafood, salads, or just for sipping.
I'D DRINK THIS:
On a pool float, one that's shaped like a flamingo or unicorn or avocado or something.
With friends, while eating shrimp tacos and enjoying a warm August night.
At home, with the windows open and Leon Bridges playing on your portable speaker.
On a nature walk that's really just a walk around your neighborhood to get ice cream.
